Frequently asked questions

Course details and requirements

  • What does GuG and GnG mean?

GuG stands for "Geodäsie und Geoinformatik", the programme’s German Name.
GnG is the abbreviation for the programme’s name Geodesy and Geoinformatics. For more information about the subject visit the introduction.

  • Which language level is required?

For your application you have to send proof of proficiency in either German language or English language. For both applies: level C1 is the required level.

Please make sure you're enclosing one of the accepted certificates.

If your English level is below C1, it is sufficient to proof B2 at the time of application. In case of admission you need to hand in the C1 certificate by the time of enrollment.

  • What is the content of this programme? Which lectures will I attend to?

Please have a look at our Curriculum.

If you're seeking more details use the handbook: It contains detailed module descriptions and all lectures offered.

  • What are the admission requirements?

In order to be successful in the course, you should proof the following subject-specific competencies:

    • 20 ECTS-CP Mathematics and Statistics
    • 15 ECTS-CP Computer Science and Programming
    • 10 ECTS-CP Physics
    • 15 ECTS-CP Geodesy and Geoinformatics

If in doubt, please contact the programme coordinator for an estimation in advance.

  • Will my application be accepted if I didn't graduate in Geodesy and Geoinformatics?

By rule, students with a Bachelor's degree in geodesy, geoinformatics, geomatics or surveying are the primary appliants for this degree programme.

Graduates of other disciplines may also be accepted. The selection committee can accept applicants without a degree in a geodetic subject. This decision will be based on your bachelor degree, especially your previous knowledge and is not negotiable. Most likely, in this case your admission will be tied to certain conditions: You will have to successfully complete additional courses. Note, that in this case the length of the programme may exceed the normal 2-year cycle!

Prior to final admission, the admission committee can invite applicants to a 20-minute online interview carried out by the professors of the degree programme. The interview helps determine if the applicant is capable of successfully completing the desired study programme.

  • How does the interview proceed?

All applicants who do not meet the requirements and are not able to meet them through additional courses, will be invited to attend a personal interview. The interview will take place about one month after the application deadline, exclusively online. It will be about 20 minutes and held by one of the programme professors. If you do not attend the interview, your application will not be considered further in the application process. Your application will be denied.

  • Does the programme require an internship in a company or governmental office?

No, the degree programme does not require a mandatory internship.

Application

  • How do I apply?

Leibniz University offers its own application portal, which is opened only during the application period. If you feel like you could use some guidance, use the step by step instruction.

  • When is the online application portal open? Why does the website not work?

    Application period for winter intake:

    • April 15th to May 31st for applicants from non-EU countries
    • June 1st to July 15th for EU-applicants

    Application period for summer intake:

    • October 15th to November 30th for from non-EU countries
    • December 1st to January 15th for EU-applicants

You must apply for this to uni-assist at least eight weeks before the application deadline for the study programme expires - take this into account when planning your application! How to get a VPD

  • Which documents do I need to enclose in my application?

The list of documents will appear as soon as you go through the online application. Originally it is written down in the application regulations (in German language, because it's an official law).
Please add to your signed application form the following documents

    • your CV
    • certified copies of
      • language certificate
      • certificate of your bachelor's degree
      • Transcript of records in English or German

Copies of your original certificates (don’t send originals!) can usually be certified by different institutions in your home country and the issuing institution itself.

  • Did you receive my documents?

Please check the application portal for any status updates.

  • Who is responsible in the application process?

Generally, all applications are administered in the university’s registration office. It has a subdivision for international applications from outside the EU. It receives all letters with applications and after the selection committee's decision it issues and sends all official admission letters. At the end of the application process, it registers the students and checks all needed documents.

The  selection committee, which members decide on the applications, is part of the Faculty. It is a group of professors, academic staff and students that holds meetings, discusses about the applications (for example if a bachelor degree is a similar subject to Geodesy or if it is a full admission or a conditional one). In the process of admission the committee issues an order (legal enactment) and thereby decides on the applications. Afterwards it gives back the list of applicants for the central registration office to send the letters to the applicants.

  • What happens after my application?

Your application is the first step of a multistage process. Learn about the following steps in a nutshell:

    • Registration office
      • collects all applications, verifies the correctness
      • forwards it to the department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics (GnG)
    • Department GnG
      • convokes the selection committee
    • Selection committee
      • evaluates all applications
      • conducts online interviews for applicants without suffiecient geodetic background
      • decides about admission with or without additional obligatory courses and denial
    • Department GnG
      • sends information about decision to Registration office
    • Registration office
      • issues admission letters and uploads it to the application portal
    • Applicant
      • receives admission letter
      • starts visa procedure and prepares for the journey to Germany

Admission and enrolment

  • When do I get to know the selection committee's decision?

We are working as fast as we can and provide the results one month after the application deadline at the earliest. Please check the status of your application: The registration office will upload your admission letter (PDF), the hard copy will be sent to you by post.

  • When will I know, if I am invited to the interview?

You will receive your invitation for the interview approximately 3 weeks after the application deadline.

Please Note: preferred appointment times cannot be considered for organisational reasons.

  • My admission is a conditional admission. What does it mean?

Your admission has a been offered with a condition to catch up the content of missing subjects: The admission board named specific courses in your admission. It formulated the condition that you have to catch up the basics for our master programme within the first two semesters. If you can't pass these courses your admission will expire.

So there is no need to registrate for extra courses now, nore to pay for anything extra. A detailed descpription of the mentioned courses can be found in the handbook.

A conditional admission can also contain the condition to submit missing documents like a language certificate with a sufficient level (C1) or a final degree certificate in case the application deadline was before the end of your bachelor degree.

  • How do I accept the offered study place?

The admission letter contains a list of documents you need to send to university and informs you about other things to think about. There are differences, depending on whether you have applied from within the EU or from a country outside the EU.

  • I want to defer my admission. Is this possible?

Please fill in the request for renewal of admission and send it to the registration office (address given in PDF).

Settling in

  • How can I find accomodation?

In Germany each student takes care of his or her own accommodation. See the university's tipps for finding accomodation.

  • How will I care for health insurance?

Most students go to one of the big German health insurances as soon as they arrive in Hannover and close a contract with them. However it is also possible to directly contact them and apply by an online registration.

  • How can I get a job when I am in Hannover?

As soon as you are student in our faculty, you can apply for student jobs in our university (so-called "Hiwi"), such as research assistant or tutor or assistant at different institutes or international office. The job opportunities in our department are a good opportunity to improve your professional skills, especially in international research, since this is mainly done in English. For some jobs you will need German of course.

  • What is important to know before searching for a job?

You should look for a job on your own. You’ll have to notice the regulations about social security insurance, income tax and labour law. Detailed information for these topics are offered provided by the Studentenwerk.
